Why is it important to Explore Renewables?
Making Science Interesting
Bringing practical, instantaneous renewable technology into the classroom will help students to fully appreciate the fruits of the labour of scientists and engineers, and the impact that technology can have on daily life.
Changing the way we use Energy
The importance of renewable energy sources is growing on an international scale. Yet a sustainable energy policy can only be successfully implemented with the positive attention of children and young adults. Explore Renewables brings to life the prospect of climate change, changing energy attitudes and encouraging the adoption of new energy technologies. The project will allow all participating school children to witness firsthand how renewable technology can be applied in their schools - and, by inference, in their own homes.
Closing the Skills Gap
To deliver the engineering solutions needed to meet the government's carbon emissions targets, the UK must have a workforce with the necessary skills and knowledge. It is a well known fact that fewer school children - within the North East and the rest of the UK - are opting to study subjects which could lead to a career within a science or engineering discipline. This project aims to redress the situation by promoting the necessary disciplines and encouraging greater awareness of future career options.
Renewable Energy in the Curriculum
Energy is an important area of all branches of science, yet its abstract nature makes it difficult to convey to pupils - and even more so when adding further information on renewable and non-renewable energy forms. Sustainable development is also becoming a key feature in the geography curriculum. More and more emphasis is being placed on investigative science and the relevance of science in everyday life.
